Are you Sitting Comfortably?

February 27, 2015

There has been a lot of research over the years to examine the health effects of sitting for long periods of time. The World Health Organisation warns us that “Physical inactivity has been identified as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality”, so perhaps sitting in a chair is affecting our long term health.

While we can't avoid sitting in the office environment, learning how to sit properly wherever we're sitting can help keep you healthy and safe.

There are plenty instructions on the internet that offer instructions on how to sit properly at work in order to avoid back, hip, and leg pains and aches. But there are a few concepts that are repeated in almost all of them.

  1. Place both feet on the ground. This means its best to avoid crossing the legs as it can obscure the weight placement on your hips. If you’re short its recommend to have a foot stool or box your feet can rest on instead.
  2. Sit so that your head eyesight is level with your computer monitor or so that you have to look down on to it at a shallow angle. This may mean that you have to heighten your seat.
  3. Take breaks and walk around.

For the home there is an option that’s both stylish and comfortable. Ekornes Stressless recliner chairs and sofas are much more than pieces of furniture – they are investments in your home and investments in your comfort.

Lay back in a recliner and experience the perforated foam which moulds directly over the frame of the chair, enabling you to descend softly into the seat and ensure full support for your back.
